Happy New Year! 2011 is the year that we are all going to take better care of our health. We are going to take our multivitamin with minerals every day and we are going to eat plenty of vegetables. By simply doing these two things, our health will improve.
Did you know that three-quarters of North Americans are resolving to improve something about themselves? Health-based resolutions are by far the most popular New Year's resolutions. Over two-thirds of people making resolutions (74 per cent) resolve to either increase exercise or to lose weight. Eating healthier (31 per cent) rounded out the top three resolutions.
However, when it comes to making permanent changes, eight out of 10 North Americans admit that they have failed to keep past resolutions'-with a lack of motivation and willpower identified as the main barriers to maintaining New Year lifestyle changes. A much smaller percentage of people actually make good on their resolutions, however. While roughly 75 percent of people stick to their goals for seven days, less than half (46 percent) are still on target several weeks later.
So what can we do to be successful with our weight loss resolution? First, eat smaller meals. The dinner plate is too big so start eating on the side plate. Remember that alcohol is used by the body just like dessert. For every glass of alcohol, drink a glass of water. Fill a large freezer bag with raw, ready-to-eat vegetables and eat them all by the end of the day. We are supposed to eat seven to 10 half-cup servings of vegetables per day, but most of us eat only two servings. Your plate should have plenty of green veggies and a palm-sized piece of protein. Eat protein at every meal. Get rid of white foods-white rice, white pasta, white flour, white sugar, white potatoes-and replace them with brown rice, whole grain pasta, whole grain flour and yams, and stevia or xylitol for sweeteners.
We must learn how to eat for the long term. Pick up a copy of my new book, A Smart Woman's Guide to Weight Loss, which has an eating plan for the entire family. Yes, you can lose weight and keep it off. Read the book, adopt the eating plan and join hundreds of thousands of people who have followed this smart diet plan and have lost weight and kept it off for good.
I am so looking forward to 2011. This year, I intend to help more people than ever achieve optimal wellness.
Kind regards, Lorna
High blood pressure, heart palpitations, restless legs syndrome, muscle pain, insomnia, mood swings and osteoporosis are just a few conditions treated with a very common mineral: magnesium. Over 82 percent of the population is magnesium deficient and simply adding this mineral to our daily supplement regimen will change our health. According to a recent study in Diabetes Care, the more magnesium you consume, the less likely you may be to develop diabetes. Magnesium plays a major role in sugar metabolism, a process that is compromised in pre-diabetics and diabetics. In this study, researchers followed 4,500 non-diabetics between 18 and 30 over a period of 20 years. By the end, 330 participants had developed diabetes. It was found those people with the highest magnesium intake were only half as likely to develop diabetes compared to people with the lowest magnesium intake. Since we know that most people do not consume enough magnesium because it has been removed from our grains and water supply, Magsmart is a fast-acting solution. Magsmart contains magnesium glycinate, the only magnesium that crosses the blood brain barrier. Other forms of magnesium cannot be tolerated in high doses because they cause explosive diarrhea, but magnesium glycinate is effective with no negative side-effects.
Magsmart is a delicious lemon-lime flavored powdered magnesium glycinate formula containing taurine, malic acid and other water-soluble minerals that support the heart and nervous system, and help to prevent against diabetes. It also improves mood and reduces depression. Take one to two scoops of Magsmart at bedtime to improve sleep and to stop anxiety and restless legs. Every woman taking the birth control pill or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) also needs magnesium glycinate as synthetic hormones deplete the body of magnesium, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and symptoms associated with synthetic hormone use. Every time you drink a cup of a caffeinated beverage, you also lose magnesium from the body so if you love coffee, you need magnesium too. Look for Magsmart at your favorite health food store.
for Night Sweats
It comes as little surprise that the results of recently released research on standard hormone replacement therapy (HRT) put another nail in the coffin of this treatment. An October 2010 report in the Journal of the American Medical Association noted that the combination of synthetic estrogen and progestins increases the risk of advanced breast cancer and death.
In July 2002, the WHI study designed to determine whether HRT (Premarin and Provera, also called Prempro) was beneficial to healthy women was halted due to serious safety concerns. In 16,608 healthy, postmenopausal women, HRT caused a 41 percent increase in the risk of stroke, a 29 percent increase in the risk of heart attack, a doubled risk of blood clots, a 22 percent increase in cardiovascular disease and a 26 percent increase in the risk of invasive breast cancer.
In 2003, it was discovered that Premarin and Provera also doubled a woman's risk of dementia, increased hearing loss and asthma. In 2004, researchers stopped the estrogen (Premarin) only arm of the study due to increased risk of stroke and dementia. A large study in 2007 suggested that women who took HRT were 20 percent more likely to die of ovarian cancer. A 2008 German study reiterated the risk of breast cancer for HRT users. And so on, and so on.
With the largest number of women in history now entering menopause, many women are searching for safer alternatives to HRT that work to halt menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness and atrophy, irritability and brain fog. On his show, Dr. Oz recently recommended sage, a common herb that has been used in Europe for hundreds of years, to treat hot flashes and night sweats. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency in the European Union has also approved 300 milligrams of sage daily as a treatment for excessive night sweats associated with menopause. The type of sage approved and recommended is the same sage in my new formula Menosmart Plus, which also contains a super-charged combination of herbs to ease menopausal symptoms fast. Here is one happy woman's experience with Menosmart Plus. W.P. from Waterloo, Ontario, wrote me to say:
"I have recently started using Menosmart Plus and I can't say enough about it. It has made life bearable again for me and for my husband. I have suggested this to anyone I know who is approaching or in menopause and, at my age, most of my friends are! This is an amazing product."

Infection and Abnormal PAPs
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), the virus that also causes warts, is implicated in a large majority of cervical dysplasia (abnormal PAPs) and cervical cancer cases. The good news is that supplements help combat HPV infection and cervical abnormalities. A new study in the International Journal of Gynecological Cancer involving 1,096 women aged 18 to 65 years old found that multivitamins, vitamin C and calcium were significantly linked with a lower risk of abnormal cervical lesions in women with high-risk HPV infection. The nutrient indole-3-carbinol (I3C) can also reverse abnormal cervical lesions before they have a chance to develop into cancer. In one study, 30 women with more serious (CINII and CINIII) cervical lesions took 200 mg of 13C daily. Fifty percent in the treatment group had complete elimination of their lesions. None of the placebo group had complete reversal of their lesions.
Indole-3-carbinol is available in Estrosmart in the dosages used in the study to reverse abnormal cells. Estrosmart also contains D-glucarate, rosemary, DIM, sulforaphane, turmeric and green tea - all researched to help prevent abnormal cell growth and keep our estrogens from converting to cancer-causing estrogens. So with Multismart, my complete multivitamin with minerals daily formula, and Estrosmart, you get the benefit of returning abnormal PAP tests to normal while helping to reduce the risk of abnormal cell growth. Spider Veins with Herbs
Ladies, it is time to start taking better care of our legs. During my speaking tour last fall, I spent hour upon hour sitting in planes and cars. If I hadn't programmed my iPhone to remind me every half an hour to stretch and move, I know I would have been as guilty as most busy people are of neglecting the veins in my legs and my circulatory system in general.
The strength of our venous system is very important. Veins are blood vessels that return blood to the heart and lungs so the blood can be reoxygenated. Blood in the veins is supposed to move up out of the legs toward the heart. When you see bulging varicose veins, what you are really seeing is blood that is accumulating or flowing backward due to poor vein health, which is also called venous insufficiency. Over time, fluid can accumulate in the legs, causing pressure, stretched veins, weakened skin and, if left untreated, open-wound ulcers. Called venous stasis ulcers, these are the most common type of ulcers in the lower legs. They are entirely treatable, however, by addressing underlying circulatory issues before a more serious problem develops. Promote circulation with my tips on improving vein health and with Veinsmart, a formula for vein support, hemorrhoids and swelling in the legs. In Europe, the herbal combination found in Veinsmart is effective enough to be classed as a drug. If you have varicose veins, be sure to take pictures before you start this regimen. You will be thrilled at the difference. Remember, a picture tells a thousand words.
and Belly Fat
Here is good news for everyone as we recover from the holiday season. Not only is organic green tea an excellent anti-cancer nutrient that I have included in Estrosmart and Estrosmart Plus, but it is also beneficial for weight loss. The American Journal of College Nutrition reported in 2010 that four cups of green tea, or two capsules of green tea extract, daily for eight weeks is excellent for fat burning. Thirty-five obese subjects found that this amount significantly decreased body weight and body mass index (BMI). Green tea also improved the subjects' cholesterol readings and reduced the oxidation of blood fats, which is a marker of aging. Last year, another study in the Journal of Nutrition found that a daily dose of 625 green tea catechins (an active ingredient) with 40 mg of caffeine enhanced weight loss and lowered blood fats (triglycerides) when combined with 25 minutes of daily exercise. Specifically, it was fat around the belly that experienced the greatest reduction. This makes sense because high insulin is a prime contributor to belly fat, and green tea extract helps to balance insulin function and production. Insulin is produced by the pancreas to push glucose (sugar) from the blood into our cells. If cells become immune to insulin's action, which often occurs, this results in excess insulin in the blood. In women, when insulin is elevated, it causes a further increase in male hormones. Classic symptoms of elevated insulin and male hormones include excess middle weight gain, acne, male-pattern facial hair growth (e.g. hair above the lip and on the chin), skin tags, diabetes and pre-diabetes. The perfect supplement pair to improve insulin resistance, rebalance hormones, and ultimately lose weight and reduce belly fat is Glucosmart with Estrosmart. as Drugs for Eye Health
Intraocular pressure (IOP) is a fancy term for high pressure in the eye. Normal eye pressure ranges from 10 to 21 mmHg. IOP occurs when the flow of nutrient- and oxygen-rich fluid to the eyes slows and this measurement increases. Ten percent of adults are affected by these subtle inner processes that can, over time, lead to vision loss and glaucoma. But in last May's issue of Clinical Opthalmology, in a study involving 79 patients, researchers compared medicated eye drops to supplementing orally with a combination of bilberry and Pycnogenol?. Bilberry and Pycnogenol? are both powerful antioxidants known to prevent damage to eye cells. In this study, subjects were divided into three groups. One group took bilberry and Pycnogenol?, the second received only medicated eye drops (the standard treatment for IOP), and the third received both supplements and eye drops. IOP and retina blood flow were monitored monthly over a period of 24 weeks. The group that received both drops and nutrients had the biggest drop in IOP in six weeks. Those in the medicated drops group had their IOP reading lowered about the same as the group receiving the nutrients only. Although the combination of drops and nutrients was most effective, what is remarkable is that taking nutrients alone was almost as effective at lowering IOP as taking the medicated drops, albeit it took 16 weeks to achieve this beneficial result.
